The Shield is one of the most exciting shows on television today; maybe the most exciting. Every episode gets your attention from the opening scene and leaves you talking about what you just watched for hours afterwards. In a world littered with run of the mill cop and crime TV shows, The Shield stands out from the pack and delivers on its promises and reputation.
After debuting in 2002, The Shield has had a very successful run of 6 seasons, with a seventh and final season set to come out in late spring or early summer of this year. The Shield deals with a police precinct in a rough part of the Los Angeles area known as Farmington. In “The Farm” citizens are sometimes more weary of police than of the drug dealers on their streets and sometimes with good reason. Kids grow up having few options but to join up with a local gang and renew the vicious cycle of violence and drugs.
Michael Chiklis plays the role of Vic Mackey, (former) head of the Strike Team, a unit of the Los Angeles Police Department that deals with gangs and major crimes in the district. Mackey and his team (the original members of his team include Shane Vendrell, played by Walton Goggins; Curtis Lemansky, played by Kenny Johnson and Ronnie Gardocki, played by David Rees Snell) were deployed by the LAPD to tackle the big criminals while maintaining a frontline presence in the streets. This involves lots of undercover work and keeping a large stable of contacts in the criminal world.
In doing so, members of the Strike Team often blur the lines between good and evil and right and wrong. Their tactics are questioned not only by the people they arrest but by their fellow police officers. The question is do they do more harm than they do good? The Shield also looks at the politics of the town and the inner workings of the police force, as well as the stories of the criminals and informants the Strike Team goes after and uses.
Other main characters include David Aceveda (played by Benito Martinez), onetime police captain of the Farmington district and current Los Angeles City Council member. He has spent much of his time attempting to bring down Vic Mackey and the Strike Team, while sometimes aligning with them out of necessity. Detective “Dutch” Wagenbach handles most of the homicide cases. His former partner Claudette Wyms is now the Captain of the Farmington district and is seen as a moral compass and by-the-book player.
The show was created by Shawn Ryan and one of the most fascinating pieces of trivia about the show is that it has no single director. Over 10 people have taken their turn directing episodes. Even the star of the show, Michael Chiklis, has shown his directorial merit while taking over 3 separate episodes. Despite the numerous directors, the show manages to retain its unique, distinctive and recognizably gritty feel from episode to episode.
The Chicago Sun Times says of The Shield, “Once it grabs you, ‘Shield’ doesn’t let go.” I couldn’t agree anymore. The Shield is nonstop action, with thought provoking, original and dramatic plotlines that will leave you begging for more.
